It has emerged what analytical tools North Korean hackers use. The CryptoQuant platform recorded a visit by a user with an IP address from the DPRK. The service reported the unusual observation in a post on the X platform.

An understanding of the internal specifics of the internet in the country explains why the visit is backed precisely by professional hackers rather than an ordinary citizen.

Details of the visit

The screenshot in the post from the Amplitude analytics system shows the visit parameters. The page title Bitcoin: MVRV Ratio, a referral from google.com, the Mac OS X operating system and the country — North Korea. The author of the post suggested that online analytics is now handled by people close to the country's top leadership. If the guesses are correct, interest in market metrics is being shown at the very highest level.

The assumption about hackers arose for a reason. In North Korea, access to the worldwide network is closed off for the vast majority of citizens. The internet in the country remains a privilege for a select few.

The network is available mainly to those connected with government, embassy or military structures. That is precisely why a visit from a North Korean IP address more likely points to a government agent.

Judging by the screenshot, the user searched Google for data on the MVRV Ratio metric and landed on a CryptoQuant profile page.

A single visit by itself does not make it possible to establish the user's identity. Nor does it confirm a direct connection to government structures. Determining the country by IP address indicates only the point of access to the network, not a specific person.

The MVRV Ratio (Market Value to Realized Value) compares an asset's market capitalization with its realized value and is used to assess how overvalued or undervalued bitcoin is relative to the average acquisition price of the coins. Why the North Korean needed the metric is unknown.
