List of fiat currencies

This page presents the world's fiat currencies. Fiat money, also known as decree money, is a currency that the government of some country has declared to be legal tender, despite the fact that it has no intrinsic value and is not backed by reserves. Historically, most currencies were based on backing by a physical commodity, such as gold or silver, but fiat money is backed solely by trust in the state.

Today, most of the paper money in the world is fiat money. Since fiat money is not tied to physical backing or currency reserves, it is always subject to the risk of depreciation due to hyperinflation. If people lose faith in their national paper money, then the money will no longer have any value.
