The rollout of XMR payments in the Fortnite Retail Row in-game store turned out to be an accidental mistake. As recounted by the founder of computer game developer Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, the option to buy its products in the official Fortnite Retail Row online store, which was launched in December last year, with Monero (XMR) was made available to users by accident during the store's setup. At this point the option has been deactivated again.

Sweeney explained that many members of his team are fans of the technology underlying cryptocurrencies; however, in order to present them to a wide audience and to young gamers, it is necessary to overcome the challenges associated with the volatility of crypto assets and protection against fraud.
