Coinbase has restored the Coinbase Wallet name to the platform it renamed Base App in July 2025, ending a one-year attempt to turn a crypto wallet into a social network.

The app now points at leveraged bets, prediction markets and tokenized shares across more than 10 blockchain networks.

The Social Bet Ended Months Before the Name Did

The rename closes a pivot that began much earlier. BeInCrypto reported the trading-first pivot in January, eight months before the branding caught up.

Base is Coinbase’s own blockchain network, launched in 2023. The 2025 rename put that network’s name on the consumer app, alongside a feed, messaging and mini apps.

Base creator Jesse Pollak handed the app back to Coinbase in July and called his on-chain social bet a failure.

Chief executive Brian Armstrong had already called time on creator coins. Those tokens let fans buy a stake in a post or a personality.

Most spiked on attention, then collapsed. BeInCrypto counted four Base experiments that flopped before Armstrong pulled the plug. They were:

• Zora
• Creator coins
• Team-backed tokens
• The social-first Base App

“We messed up, time to turn the page,” Armstrong said at the time.  

What Traders Will Actually Notice

Coinbase Wallet now routes users to Hyperliquid for perpetual futures. Those are contracts that let traders bet on price using borrowed money, with no expiry date.

It also carries prediction markets and tokenized stocks, which are shares tracked on a blockchain instead of at a broker. Robinhood Chain and Monad join the supported networks.

Robinhood Chain already ranks among the leading tokenized stock venues, according to Grayscale. Coinbase says the wallet will test products its main exchange cannot list first.

Perpetual futures remain closed to United States users, a limit Washington is now weighing for Hyperliquid.

Coinbase has not published a fee schedule for the wallet. It has also not said whether the trading push grew user numbers.

Coinbase web pages still showed Base App branding on Thursday, hours after the name was said to have changed. Traders who only swap tokens will notice a new icon and little else. Those reaching for leverage will notice the wall.
