Ethereum (ETH) price has fallen 3.7% from the $2,558 intraday high it reached on August 27, its strongest level since January 31. The asset now trades near $2,463.

The slowdown arrives alongside a broader market decline that also reached precious metals like gold. The pullback raises a question about whether the August rally has run its course.

Short-Term Signals Point to Cooling ETH Demand

The near-term data gives that question weight. Spot Ethereum ETFs took in $234.5 million on August 27, marking their largest single-session inflow of 2026. Two days later, that figure fell to $102.2 million. By August 31, it reached $87.7 million.

Trading volume across the products contracted alongside the flows. Turnover dropped from $1.37 billion on August 28 to $742 million on August 31, according to SoSo Value data.

The Coinbase Premium Index tells a similar story. The metric turned positive in late August for the first time since May, then slipped back to negative territory near -0.014.

Whale activity has added to the near-term pressure. Blockchain tracker, Lookonchain, flagged that large holders are moving ETH to exchanges. 

One whale received 167,855 ETH, worth about $408 million, from multiple wallets before moving the funds to exchanges.

The whale sent 70,739 ETH, valued at roughly $174 million, to several exchanges. It still holds 97,115 ETH worth approximately $237 million, according to on-chain data.

Macro conditions turned at the same time. Hawkish Federal Reserve signals lifted rate-hike expectations, which pressured non-yielding assets across markets.

Structural Positioning Has Not Shifted

The longer-horizon picture looks different. Exchange reserves have fallen to 14.92 million ETH, down from roughly 16.9 million in January, according to CryptoQuant data.

That drawdown of close to 2 million coins predates the August rally. It reflects a year-long trend rather than a reaction to recent price action.

ETF demand has swung sharply over a longer window. Spot Ethereum funds recorded net redemptions of $1.12 billion between January and July.

August brought in $1.852 billion, the strongest month since August 2025. That flipped 2026 net inflows positive at $734 million.

The inflow streak now stands at 11 consecutive sessions running from August 17 through August 31. Cumulative net inflows total $13.06 billion.

Derivatives positioning has cooled as well. CryptoQuant contributor Arab Chain reported that Binance’s Estimated Leverage Ratio for Ethereum fell from 0.99 in early June to 0.647.

“This is a significant development, as lower leverage reduces the likelihood of widespread and cascading liquidations in the event of a sudden market downturn,” the analyst said.

Momentum indicators are therefore softening while positioning holds steady. Whether the ETF streak survives September will show which horizon matters more.
