Hoskinson and Buterin debate lattices and AI risks

On 9 October 2026, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson responded to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s views on AI’s possible impact on cryptanalysis. The exchange concerns future mathematical advances, not an announcement of a successful break.

Buterin suggested that AI-accelerated mathematics could weaken some lattice-based schemes. He favours hash-based signatures where applicable and more conservative parameter choices. He also explicitly cautioned against rushing to move funds to new wallets.

Hoskinson countered that the analogy with the General Number Field Sieve (GNFS), an integer-factorisation method, does not identify a concrete lattice attack. In his view, parameter changes should follow attack-cost estimates rather than a universal multiplier. These are the authors’ positions, not proofs of security for an entire algorithm family.

Standards context

In 2024, NIST standardised ML-KEM for key encapsulation, ML-DSA for digital signatures, and the hash-based signature scheme SLH-DSA. These serve different tasks and use different constructions. Standards do not rule out future research, and a social-media debate does not itself revoke them.

Primary sources: Charles Hoskinson; Vitalik Buterin; NIST.
