Usually this is entering a captcha, viewing advertising banners, completing surveys, or clicking on links. The name itself refers to the image of a faucet from which water drips drop by drop: the amounts handed out are measured in fractions of a coin and are almost always negligible.

Historically, faucets appeared at the dawn of Bitcoin as a tool for popularization: they helped newcomers obtain cryptocurrency to their wallet for the first time and get acquainted with how transactions work. Faucets earn their income mainly through advertising and affiliate programs, so the size of the payouts directly depends on their advertising model rather than on the market value of the asset.
