The Base L2 network team has presented the plan for the Beryl upgrade. Activation on the mainnet is scheduled for June 25.

The testnet has already been launched.

The main innovation will be the B20 standard. Unlike ordinary smart contracts, its logic is built directly into the node software code. This will make it possible to create tokens that work faster and cheaper.

B20 is fully compatible with the ERC-20 format, so new assets will be supported by existing wallets and exchanges. At launch, developers will be offered two templates: for stablecoins and for ordinary assets. 

In the future, the standard will allow fees to be paid in the tokens themselves (without using ETH) and will double the network's throughput.

The upgrade will also shorten the time to withdraw assets from Base to Ethereum. Instead of seven days, the procedure will take five. This became possible thanks to the transition to the Multiproofs proof system.

The technical part of the upgrade includes the implementation of Reth V2. The new version will reduce the load on nodes' disk space and speed up block processing.

The next major upgrade, called Cobalt, is scheduled for September. It is expected to introduce native account abstraction.

As a reminder, in May Base announced the integration of ZK proofs from Succinct Labs to improve security and speed up transaction finalization.
