Emirates Launches Crypto Flight Payments, But There’s a Catch for Most Travelers

Emirates crypto payments are live on emirates.com and the Emirates App through Crypto.com Pay. Only eligible UAE residents qualify, and only on fares priced in Emirati dirham (AED).

Emirates carried 53.2 million passengers last financial year across 152 cities in 80 countries. The new option covers one of those countries and one currency.

Emirates Crypto Payments Settle in Dirhams, Not Tokens

Customers fund the booking from a Crypto.com wallet. Emirates never receives Bitcoin, Ethereum or any other token.

Settlement arrives in dirhams, or in dirham-backed stablecoins approved by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE). The conversion sits inside a Stored Value Facilities (SVF) licence, a Central Bank framework covering prepaid and wallet-based payment products.

That design is not new. Dubai Finance spelled out the same mechanism in May 2025. Crypto.com would convert payments into dirhams before moving them to government accounts.

However, the checkout adds steps. Mobile users are pushed into the Crypto.com app to approve the payment. Desktop users scan a QR code and confirm on a phone. A saved card requires neither.

Other exchanges have taken the same route with local payment rails. Each converts crypto balances into local currency at the till.

Why Most Emirates Passengers Cannot Use It

Emirates already offered 14 payment gateways before this launch, according to a Dubai Finance partnership announced last October. Crypto.com Pay becomes the 15th, and the only one gated by residency.

That gate cuts against the stated purpose of the earlier agreement. Emirates and Dubai Finance identified international tourists as the emirate’s largest untapped pool for digital payments. They cited 18.7 million visitors to Dubai in 2024.

Non-residents are exactly who the new option excludes.

One Licence Holder Controls Every UAE Transaction

Crypto.com’s UAE arm is Foris DAX Middle East FZE. On May 11 it became the first virtual asset service provider (VASP) granted an SVF license by the CBUAE.

No competitor holds that permission. Anyone using regulated virtual asset payments in the UAE must be onboarded through Crypto.com. Rival exchanges cannot offer the equivalent rail, whatever their standing under Dubai’s virtual asset rulebook.

The same UAE stored value licence unlocked a planned Dubai Duty Free integration and payments for government fees.

The Timeline Behind the Launch

Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, presented the pace as quick.

“Moving from signature to launch with Crypto.com in under a year is a credit to both teams,” read an excerpt in the launch statement, citing Kazim.

The dates read differently. Emirates signed its memorandum of understanding on July 9, 2025, and the product went live on July 28, 2026. That is 384 days.

Roughly 80% of that wait elapsed before the Central Bank issued the licence. Emirates then shipped the integration in 78 days.

The sequencing matters for anyone expecting comparable launches elsewhere. Engineering was never the constraint.

What Would Have to Change

Widening access is not Emirates’ call. The CBUAE would have to allow settlement beyond dirhams and dirham-backed stablecoins, or extend eligibility past UAE residents.

Dubai wants 90% of government and private sector transactions digital by the end of 2026. Whether a residency-locked crypto option moves that figure is a fair question.

Emirates did not immediately respond to BeInCrypto’s questions about the timeline or plans to widen eligibility.
