Calm Before the Storm: 3 Semiconductor Giants Share 1 Chart Pattern
Nvidia (NVDA), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Micron Technology (MU) have compressed into the same symmetrical triangle on their daily charts. All three semiconductor stocks closed higher on Tuesday, hours before Nvidia reports Q2 earnings.
These three semiconductor stocks are the largest in the S&P 500 electronic technology group. Each shows falling volume and a relative strength index near 50, which signals indecision rather than direction.
Tuesday’s session favored these three specifically. Apple (AAPL) slipped 0.14%, and Broadcom (AVGO) fell 0.56%, while all three chip names closed green.
Nvidia Holds $210 Support Into Earnings
Nvidia’s daily chart shows lower highs from the May peak at $236.54 and higher lows from the April bottom near $165. Price closed Tuesday at $213.05.
The $209 to $213 zone is holding as support. Supply sits at $225 to $230, where the descending trendline now overlaps and rejected the mid-August push. Below that, the $193 to $196 zone has absorbed selling since June.
Volume has fallen steadily since March, while RSI sits near 50. That compression suggests traders are waiting for the Nvidia report due after Wednesday’s close.
AMD Faces First Resistance at $492
AMD built a wider triangle after rallying from $192.87 in March to $584.73 in July, a gain of roughly 203%.
The stock closed at $479.18 on Tuesday after Raymond James upgraded it to Strong Buy with a $641 target. Support runs from $435 to $452, anchored by the 0.382 Fibonacci retracement at $435.04.
However, the first ceiling is the 0.236 retracement at $492.25, not the $540 to $555 band above it. Volume and RSI are compressing here too, echoing other Nasdaq leaders that stalled after parabolic runs.
Micron Tests Its Descending Trendline
Micron carries the steepest triangle of the three. Its late-July selloff briefly broke below the 0.5 retracement at $783.25 before recovering.
Price closed Tuesday at $932.97, holding the 0.382 level at $894.58. Meanwhile, Tuesday’s high of $946.67 tagged the descending trendline and failed to close through it.
Management said this week that data centers want 50% more memory than Micron can ship, with about $22 billion in customer prepayments backing expansion.
What to Watch Next in Semiconductor Stocks
The patterns rhyme, but the damage does not. Nvidia sits 10% below its high, AMD 18%, and Micron 26%.
Therefore, three triggers matter. Nvidia needs a close above $230, AMD above $492.25, and Micron above $946. Failure at those levels turns attention back to $195, $435, and $783, respectively.
