Snap Inc. has unveiled SPECS — a portable computer in the form of augmented reality glasses. The device is already available for pre-order at a price of $2,195.

Shipments to the US, the UK and France will begin this autumn.

SPECS work autonomously without connecting to a smartphone or external modules. The glasses weigh between 132 and 136 grams. The frame is made of TR90 polymer. Device specifications:

• field of view — 51 degrees;
• two Snapdragon processors;
• signal latency — 7 milliseconds;
• up to 4 hours of operation on a single charge (up to 20 hours with the case).

The lenses of the glasses are fitted with an electrochromic coating. It allows the glass to change its level of tint within 10 seconds depending on the lighting.

The device runs on its own Snap OS operating system. The interface supports gesture and voice control. Users have access to navigation, work tools and educational apps. 

Developers received an updated Lens Studio toolkit for creating AR effects. AI assistants are integrated into the system and are able to analyze the surrounding environment in real time.

Snap put an emphasis on data protection. The glasses are equipped with an LED indicator that lights up during video recording. Most data is processed directly on the device without being sent to the cloud. Users can manage their sync history on their own and delete recordings.

To recap, in June Meta removed facial recognition system components from the latest version of the Meta AI app for smart glasses after the publication of a WIRED investigation.
