Beam (BEAM) is an open-source cryptocurrency that operates on the basis of the MimbleWimble protocol. This is already the second cryptocurrency built on the basis of this protocol. The first cryptocurrency based on MimbleWimble was the Grin cryptocurrency, but despite the similarity, BEAM differs from Grin in several important aspects - it includes monetary policy, mining, has its own community, and supports general governance.


The Beam cryptocurrency was launched in early January 2019 and became the first full implementation of MimbleWimble, followed a couple of weeks later by the Grin cryptocurrency. The wallet for Beam is written in C++ based on the MimbleWimble source code, but with some additional features. Currently, the wallet with a graphical interface for users is available on MacOS, Windows, and Linux.

The Beam wallet has several features that extend the original MimbleWimble design. some of them are still in development, some are already fully implemented, such as signing transactions using the Schnorr protocol, the ability to control subscriptions, Bright Boson offline transactions, and integration with a hardware wallet as part of Bright Boson.

One of the current problems of Beam is that it has no support for PoW mining, which cuts off GPU miners, and ASIC mining does not yet have much interest in supporting the decentralized Beam network, however the team is doing everything possible to increase hash power in the near future to maintain the stability of the decentralization of the Beam network.
