Refusing to Use AI Triples the Risk of Being Laid Off

Tech professionals who turned to artificial intelligence (AI) less than once a month faced a layoff risk three times higher than those who used the technology at least once a month. These figures were obtained from a Gallup survey.

The data exposes a gap within an industry that already lays people off more often than others. The survey showed that keeping a job depends not only on one's position or specialization, but also on the regular use of AI.

Why those who did not use AI are at risk

Gallup surveyed those who kept their jobs and those who lost them — about how often they used AI at work. It turned out that among those laid off, the share of «those who did not use AI» was higher than among those who stayed on staff.

Among former employees, 62% admitted that they turned to artificial intelligence no more than once a year or did not use it at all. Among those still working, this figure is 50%. At the same time, 28% of those laid off «use AI frequently», compared with only 22% of those who stayed.

The gap between the groups, according to Gallup's assessment, is statistically significant. The pattern holds even when accounting for age, education, industry and the time elapsed since the layoff.

«Employees who did not use AI turned out to be more vulnerable in the labor market», — Gallup researchers note.

Where AI-related layoffs turned out to be widespread

Workers in the tech sector face an elevated risk significantly more often: for those laid off in this field it stands at 13%. Those working in the sector account for only 6% of the total number of layoffs.

Within this group, those who used AI less than once a month were three times more likely to lose their job than colleagues who used artificial intelligence at least once a month. A similar, though less pronounced, pattern is also observed across the labor market as a whole.
