The Algorand Foundation presented a roadmap for the network's transition to "broad quantum resilience" by the end of 2027. The first protocol updates are scheduled for Q3 2026. Quantum computers won't wait for the industry to catch up.Algorand began preparing in 2022, and Falcon post-quantum signatures are already live on Mainnet.Now we're going further: native Falcon-1024, hybrid accounts, and a clear path to broad quantum resilience by the end of… The plan covers accounts, wallets, developer tools, multisig, and individual consensus components. The foundation pointed to a March analysis by Google Quantum AI, according to which future cryptographically relevant quantum computers will be able to break elliptic-curve cryptography with fewer resources than previously assumed. What has already been implemented Algorand began preparing for post-quantum protection in 2022 with the implementation of State Proofs. These are compact ledger-state certificates that are signed with the Falcon scheme every 256 rounds. In November 2025 the team reported the first transaction on the main network authorized by Falcon signatures. For this it used LogicSig — a programmable authorization mechanism that the Algorand Virtual Machine checks before executing a transaction. What is planned for 2026–2027 In the protocol release scheduled for Q3 2026, Algorand is expected to receive native support for post-quantum accounts. This will allow them to be used without workarounds via LogicSig. The Algorand Foundation expects that SDKs will allow Falcon-1024 accounts to be created from a standard 25-word seed phrase. The protocol is also expected to receive support for several signature schemes without changing the address format. The network will continue to work with Ed25519 and will be able to add Falcon-1024, Falcon-512, ML-DSA, and other schemes. Particular emphasis is placed on hybrid accounts, which will combine classic and post-quantum keys. By the end of 2026 the foundation plans to implement native multisig for several cryptographic schemes and support for Falcon-512. In 2026 the Algorand Foundation also intends to begin migrating its own treasury to post-quantum accounts. Such addresses will be available to staking participants. A separate block of work concerns consensus. Currently, the selection of committee members in Algorand depends on a VRF that relies on elliptic-curve cryptography. Consensus messages are signed via Ed25519. These mechanisms are not considered fully resistant to quantum attacks. The foundation hopes to present research work on a post-quantum VRF by early 2027 if the current analysis yields a positive result. For consensus messages, a hybrid model is being considered in which Ed25519 and Falcon will be used for some time. "Post-quantum security cannot be retrofitted after Q-Day," — said Algorand Foundation CTO Bruno Martins. The roadmap separately states that the timelines, the composition of releases, and the set of solutions are forecasts in nature. They may change as the development and the standards of post-quantum cryptography evolve. Recall that in May the BNB Chain developers reported on the results of testing the network's transition to post-quantum cryptography. The experiment confirmed the blockchain's theoretical readiness for future threats, but revealed a significant drop in performance.
