Hacker steals $2.1M from Aztec Connect, shut down 3 years ago

An attacker withdrew more than $2.1 million from the Aztec Connect platform on June 14. The hacker exploited a vulnerability in the proof-verification mechanism.

Blockchain security firm CertiK spotted the suspicious transaction and flagged it on X (formerly Twitter).

Aztec Connect hack: hacker stole $2.1 million

According to CertiK experts, the breach was caused by incomplete verification of the submitted proofs. One of the smart contract's functions checked only the beginning of the proof, while the token-transfer instructions embedded in another part of the data went without proper oversight. This allowed the attacker to substitute the fund-withdrawal mechanism and steal about $2.19 million.

The Aztec Foundation said it had received a notification of a possible Aztec Connect exploit. The team emphasized that the incident does not affect the ERC-20 AZTEC token or the smart contracts of the active Aztec network.

It also added that Aztec Connect ceased operations three years ago, so Aztec Labs no longer manages this protocol. The company confirmed that it is conducting an investigation but can no longer influence what is happening..

"Aztec Labs has no admin keys and does not gain control over the system. We cannot pause or update it," — the developers stated in their message.

The hack occurred just a few days after the exploit at Raydium (RAY). Back then, hackers withdrew about $1.3 million from five outdated liquidity pools on the Solana (SOL) network. The latest attack became yet another in a series of hacks this month. Total damage, according to DeFiLlama, has already reached $43.93 million since the start of June.
