Difficulty is one of the basic concepts of a blockchain network with mining. Because new coins are issued on a strictly defined schedule while the network's computing power changes, the protocol includes the ability to automatically adjust the pace at which blocks are found. This is exactly what the difficulty parameter is responsible for: it determines how hard it is for miners to find a solution that grants the right to add a new block.

The mechanism works as a self-regulating system. If the network's total hashrate grows, difficulty rises so that the average block creation time stays stable. If power falls, difficulty decreases. In the Bitcoin network, for example, recalculation happens every 2016 blocks, which on average corresponds to roughly a two-week interval.
