What is the flippening in cryptocurrencies?
The flippening (flippening, from flip — a turnover, a change of positions) is a hypothetical event in which ether (Ethereum) surpasses bitcoin in market capitalization and takes the leading position in the cryptocurrency ranking. The term arose within the crypto community and reflects a long-standing debate about which of the leading networks will turn out to be dominant in the long run.
Supporters of the flippening scenario usually point to the functional differences between the projects. Bitcoin is traditionally perceived as a digital store of value with a limited supply, whereas Ethereum is a platform for smart contracts, decentralized applications, tokens and DeFi infrastructure. The expansion of use cases and developer activity are seen as factors capable of pushing ether's capitalization upward.
The opposite, joking term — the floppening (floppening, from floppy — sluggish, limp) — describes the reverse situation, when ether's position relative to bitcoin weakens. It is important to understand that the flippening remains a matter of forecasts and is not an accomplished fact: the ratio of cryptocurrency capitalizations is constantly changing and depends on many market and technological circumstances.
