The US proposed creating a quantum computing commission
Congressmen Mike Lawler and Pat Ryan introduced the National Security Commission Quantum Computing Act of 2026. The document provides for the creation of an independent commission to assess the development of quantum computing and its impact on US national security.
The commission is to consist of 11 members. It is expected to be tasked with assessing US competitiveness, foreign investment, workforce needs, the military application of quantum technologies and risks to economic security. The bill provides for funding of up to $10 million from the Department of Defense budget for fiscal year 2027, a first report to the president and Congress within 180 days, and the commission's operation until October 1, 2030.
