A HYIP (High Yield Investment Program) is a so-called high yield investment program that attracts depositors' funds with promises of unusually large returns over a short period. In terms of its mechanics, such projects are a type of Ponzi scheme, commonly known as a financial pyramid.

The point is that payouts to early participants are made not from real profit generated by any activity, but from the money deposited by new investors. As long as the inflow of funds grows, the system appears to be working and confirms the promised returns. But as soon as the stream of new participants dries up, payouts stop, and the vast majority of depositors lose their investments.

Warning signs of a HYIP

• A promise of guaranteed high returns with no clear source of profit.
• Pressure to act fast: calls to «get in on time» and referral bonuses for recruiting new people.
• Opacity: no clear description of the business model or the people responsible.

Understanding how a HYIP works helps protect your capital. Any promises of fixed super-returns should be treated as a sign of elevated risk, and decisions should be made only after independently verifying the project and soberly assessing the probability of losses.
